Volunteer Spotlight - Rich
How Long Have You Been Volunteering with Schneck Medical Center, and In What Area(s) or Capacity do you serve?
I started in July 2016 when the Guild purchased the shuttle. I'm still driving the shuttle and enjoying helping people.
What Inspired You to Become a Volunteer at Schneck?
I retired in September of 2015 from the business that I worked with for 29 years and then I needed something to do. I always looked at Schneck as a neat place to work or volunteer, I always had good experiences as a patient there and had caring people that took care of me. I also knew some people that worked and volunteered at Schneck, so I asked them what was available. One friend of mine was a volunteer and knew about the shuttle starting up and told me to check with the volunteer manager, Amy.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your Volunteer Experience?
I enjoy the service we provide driving the shuttle, we are very appreciated. Many patients/visitors rely on the shuttle. The parking lot gets full fast and many handicapped people must park further away from the entrance than they can manage on their own. The shuttle gives them satisfaction that we are here to help them.
Can You Share a Memorable Moment or Meaningful Interaction You've Had While Volunteering?
In the summer of my second year driving the shuttle, there was a mother with 5 small children (never knew their names). They were always excited about riding in the shuttle. They were there every Tuesday morning during the summer, and I was able to keep an eye out for their arrival so I could pick them up at their car. After their appointment I would pick them up at the main entrance to take them back to their car, along the way the kids would always want me to drive past the helicopter. One time I saw the helicopter staff providing a tour to some students and I went up to one of the staff members and asked if I could bring some younger kids over and they said sure. It so happened, this was a Tuesday morning and when the kids were done with their appointment, I asked their mother if I could provide a tour of the helicopter and she said that would be great. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the mother thanked me. After that summer I never saw them again, but I hope I provided a great and memorable experience for them. So sometimes, it can be fun to visit a hospital.
What Would You Say to Someone Who is Considering Becoming a Volunteer at Schneck Medical Center?
If you enjoy helping people and your only reward is the smile they give you back, what's better than that!!
